Makeup Tips

Cool or Warm? People with cool skin tones have more pink undertones to their skin. Warm skin tones have more yellow. People with cool skin tones tend to look better in shadows and blushes that have more pink or blue tones. These includes pinks, burgundy, plums, purples, mint green, grey or silver. Warms tend to look better in colors that have a yellow undertone. Peach tones, bronzes, browns, and corals all look good on warm skin tones. Olive greens, true greens and gold also look good.  Those with neutral skin tones can choose any color that makes them feel beautiful whether it's a cool, warm or neutral tone.

Three shades of eye color are generally recommended, a light color for highlighting, a medium color for shading and a dark color for framing.

If eyelid is barely visible, a lighter shade can be applied to the lid to bring it forward. If the lid appears too prominent you can use a lighter shade above the eye and a darker shade on the lid to make it look less prominent.

Wide set eyes can be made to appear closer by applying a darker color to inner area of lids, bringing it up towards the brow. This makes eyes appear closer together.

Close set eyes can be made to appear further apart by applying a darker color on the outer lid and fading it gently out toward the outer brow.

If your eyes are deep set try using lighter shades of eye color to bring them out more. Using darker shades of blush and lipstick even accentuates this more.

To soften a prominent cheek bone apply a light blush color along the cheek bone itself, blending well.

To make the face look slimmer and define the cheekbones choose two shades of blush. Apply a lighter shade along the cheek bone to highlight it and a darker shade below the cheek bone, following the natural curve, to make the area appear deeper. The two colors should then be blended with a soft clean brush.

When choosing a lipstick shade, keep the warm and cool tones in mind. Lip color that is peach or brown toned looks better on warm skin tones, while pinks or plums look better on cools. True red looks good on any skin tone.

People with small lips should avoid darker shades of lip color. Lining the lips with a liner brush in a darker shade and applying a light shade on the fleshy part of the lips make them appear fuller.

To make your lip color last longer, apply lipstick, blot with a tissue, lay the tissue over the lips and lightly dust mineral veil or foundation powder on the outside of the tissue.  Remove the tissue and apply another layer of lipstick.

Blush shades can also be used to define lips or as lip color if applied over gloss or lip balm.

Mineral veil can be used over mineral makeup for a "soft touch" look or if you have normal, dry and especially if you have very oily skin.

A rosewater spritzer, the gentlest of all astringents, is often as a toner for normal to oily skin.  It  can also be used to "set" the make-up if you have very dry skin.

Black, Brown, Ash brown or Grey matte eye color can be used with a small liner brush to define eyebrows. For a natural look apply in small light strokes the same direction the hair grows. Use two different shades for an even more natural look.

Any of the eye colors can be used as eye liner.  Apply with a liner brush.  Dip the brush in water before dipping it in the eye color to make a more dramatic liner or apply dry for a softer more subtle effect.
